Week 19 (Jan. 5 - Jan. 9)

On Monday and Tuesday, students in Periods 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, and 8 reviewed the questions from their midterm exams.

On Wednesday and Thursday, students in Periods 2 and 3 began to explore the concepts in Chapter 11 (Liquids and Intermolecular Forces). On Friday, students in Period 3 continued to study Chapter 11 and also received a packet for Chapter 12 (Solids and Modern Materials)

Homework for Periods 2 and 3: Work through the Chapter 11 packet, and complete your Mastering Chemistry assignment on Chapter 11, which is due on Tuesday morning. Looking ahead, there should be a quiz on Chapters 11 and 12 on Thursday/Friday.

On Thursday, students in Period 4 learned about Lewis electron dot structures and molecular geometry/shapes, as it relates to VSEPR theory. 

Homework for Period 4: Study your notes from Thursday's class, and be prepared for a quiz on Lewis dot structures and molecular geometry. You should be able to draw the Lewis structure for a molecule or ion, and then tell me what shape it should have (tetrahedral, trigonal planar, trigonal pyramidal, linear, or bent).

On Wednesday and Thursday, students in Periods 5, 7, and 8 began to explore the properties of gases and the kinetic-molecular theory. On Friday, students in Periods 5 and 7 saw examples of the diffusion of gases at different speeds (NH₃ vs. HCl) and saw examples of the relationships between pressure, volume and temperature.

Homework for Periods 5, 7, and 8: Continue to work on the packet that covers the kinetic-molecular theory and gas laws. Looking ahead, there should be a quiz on gases on Thursday/Friday.
